Autism

Autism is a neurodivergent condition that begins in early childhood. We do not know what causes autism. Autism is a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Autism is different for everyone, and no two people diagnosed have the same challenges. Some people with autism have difficulty speaking and interacting; others have intellectual disabilities. Some people with autism may require significant support and others may be able to live on their own.

At Hope Pediatric Behavioral Solutions, we offer Autism testing from age 2 through adulthood. We use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, second edition (ADOS-2) for all tests. The ADOS-2 is the gold standard for diagnosis of autism. This is a standardized test used to diagnose autism spectrum disorder. The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured play or interview session that evaluates communication, social interaction, and other behaviors. The assessment is tailored to the individual's age and communication level. This examination usually takes 60-120 minutes depending on the child’s development and comfort level.

From beginning to end testing will take 3 appointments. The first appointment will consist of an interview with parents and the child along with questionnaires to determine if testing for autism is appropriate and the proper module for the ADOS-2, this usually takes an hour. During the second visit I will perform the ADOS-2. At the third visit you will be provided with results and a diagnosis if appropriate, this visit usually takes 30-45 minutes. We offer autism testing 1-2 days a month with immediate availability.

If you are concerned about your child being autistic, first you should speak with your primary care provider (PCP). Make a list of symptoms that you have observed, take this with you to speak to your PCP. At the visit with your PCP discuss your concerns and observations. Then request a referral to our office for testing. Once your PCP has sent a referral to our office you will be contacted for an appointment.
